Clarens is the small village set against the Maluti Mountains in the Eastern Free State, founded in 1912 and nicknamed the "Jewel of the Free State". It sits in a sandstone-built bowl with views across to Lesotho's Drakensberg escarpment and is South Africa's leading mountain-retreat conferencing village — over 50 small art galleries, the Clarens Brewery, and a substantial cluster of country guesthouses and lodges within a short drive. The Golden Gate Highlands National Park is 20 minutes east.

OR Tambo International is 3 hours 30 minutes via the N3 and N5. Bloemfontein is 3 hours via the N1.

Climate and seasonality

High-altitude Eastern Free State climate — cold winters with reliable light snowfall in June and July (one of the few SA destinations where it snows almost every year), warm summers with afternoon thunderstorms. October and April are the most reliable months.
