Clarens is the small village set against the Maluti Mountains in the Eastern Free State, founded in 1912 and nicknamed the "Jewel of the Free State". It sits in a sandstone-built bowl with views across to Lesotho's Drakensberg escarpment and is South Africa's leading mountain-retreat conferencing village — over 50 small art galleries, the Clarens Brewery, and a substantial cluster of country guesthouses and lodges within a short drive. The Golden Gate Highlands National Park is 20 minutes east.

Where conferences happen

Clarens Country House, Mont d'Or Hotel and Conference Centre, Protea Hotel Clarens, Bokpoort Cowboy Ranch, plus a long list of boutique guesthouses and farm-stay venues. Capacities are small (15–120 delegates).

When to pick Clarens

Executive strategy off-sites, board retreats, leadership programmes, family-office events, and conferences where the Maluti mountain backdrop and quiet village character are part of the brief. Strong for art-and-design-sector events, religious and pastoral retreats, and partner programmes paired with Golden Gate or Lesotho.

Getting there

OR Tambo International is 3 hours 30 minutes via the N3 and N5. Bloemfontein is 3 hours via the N1.

Climate and seasonality
