George is the second-largest town in the Western Cape and the commercial centre of the Garden Route. It sits between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, with the Outeniqua Pass climbing dramatically to the Karoo immediately inland. The town has its own airport (George Airport) with daily flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, which makes it one of only a handful of mid-sized SA towns with direct fly-in conferencing. The Fancourt golf and conference resort is the dominant venue.

Where conferences happen

Fancourt is the anchor — a five-star country hotel with three championship golf courses, dedicated conference and banqueting facilities, and capacity for 1,000+ delegate events. It is consistently in the top tier of South African conference resorts. Outside Fancourt, Oubaai Hotel and Golf Resort, Garden Route Casino, Hoekwil Country House and several mid-market hotels handle smaller events. The town centre also has standard four-star options (Protea, Garden Court).

When to pick George

Direct flights make George the default Garden Route conference choice for any group flying in from Johannesburg or Cape Town. Strong fit for golf-led incentive programmes (Fancourt is rated among the world's top 100 golf resorts), corporate retreats wanting a coastal-mountain combination, and destination conferences for groups that want the Garden Route experience without the longer drives to Knysna or Plett.

Getting there

George Airport (GRJ) handles 4–6 daily flights to Johannesburg and 2–3 to Cape Town. Drive time from Cape Town is 4.5 hours via the N2. Drive time from Knysna is 50 minutes; from Mossel Bay 30 minutes; from Oudtshoorn 50 minutes via the Outeniqua Pass.

Climate and seasonality

Year-round all-weather climate — warm summers (22–28°C), mild winters (8–18°C), with rain spread across the year (no dry season). The Outeniqua Mountains create a microclimate noticeably wetter than the rest of the Western Cape. Whale-watching season runs June–November.

What to budget

Fancourt day-delegate runs R1,400–R2,800 depending on package. Mid-market options R900–R1,400. Accommodation R2,200–R5,500 four-star, R6,000+ at Fancourt and Oubaai.
