Oudtshoorn sits in the semi-arid Klein Karoo on the inland side of the Outeniqua Mountains, about 50 minutes from George. It built its wealth on ostrich feathers in the late 1800s — the so-called "feather palaces" of the Edwardian era still stand on the surrounding farms — and remains the world's ostrich-farming capital. The Cango Caves, twenty-five minutes north, are one of the country's most-visited natural attractions. Conferencing here is small-group, character-led, and hospitality-driven.

Most Oudtshoorn conferencing happens at country hotels and ostrich-farm guesthouses — Surval Boutique Olive Estate, Rosenhof Country House, Queen's Hotel, Buffelsdrift Game Lodge and De Zeekoe. Capacities are small (20–120 delegates). The Cango Wildlife Ranch and an ostrich farm tour (Highgate, Safari Ostrich Farm) work well as group activities.

When to pick Oudtshoorn

Smaller corporate retreats, family-office groups, training programmes, and partner programmes paired with George, Mossel Bay or the Garden Route. The Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees in March–April is the country's second-largest arts festival — a strong incentive-programme overlay if dates align.

Getting there

George Airport is 50 minutes via the Outeniqua Pass (a scenic but slow drive). Cape Town is 5 hours via the N1 + R62 inland route, or via the coastal N2 + George.

Climate and seasonality

Klein Karoo climate — hot summers (35°C+ in January and February), cool dry winters (frost possible at night), very low rainfall, almost always sunny. Best months for outdoor programmes are March–May and September–November.
