Johannesburg is South Africa's largest city and the economic engine of the country — about 26% of national GDP, the JSE, and the headquarters of most major SA corporates. It was founded on a gold reef in 1886 and has grown outward in concentric rings ever since: the original mining CBD, the inner suburbs (Braamfontein, Parktown, Yeoville, Bertrams), the wealthy north (Houghton, Sandhurst, Hyde Park), and the dense modern business clusters of Sandton, Rosebank, Midrand and the East Rand. For conferencing, "Johannesburg" usually means the inner-city corridor — Sandton has its own listing.
The inner city covers Braamfontein (academic, media, NGO and creative-sector events; close to Wits and the Constitutional Court), Newtown (cultural and arts-led conferencing; the Market Theatre and Museum Africa anchor it), Parktown (heritage venues — restored mining-era mansions like the View, Park Hotel, the Rand Club), Auckland Park (SABC and University of Johannesburg events), and the broader CBD for government and corporate-stakeholder events. The bigger volume hotels and conference centres sit further north — Sandton, Rosebank, Hyde Park — but these have their own pages.
Events tied to Wits University, the Constitutional Court, the SABC, the inner-city media cluster, or any organisation that benefits from being in the original CBD rather than the corporate suburbs. Inner Joburg has converted industrial venues and heritage spaces (Maboneng, Sci-Bono, the Cosmopolitan, 44 Stanley) that no Sandton hotel can match. It is also significantly cheaper than Sandton — same-spec venues run 25–40% less.
OR Tambo International is 25 minutes east via the R24 and N12. The Gautrain links OR Tambo to the inner city via Park Station (40 minutes), or directly to Sandton/Rosebank (15 minutes).
Highveld climate — dry sunny winters (cold mornings, mild afternoons, frequent frost) and warm wet summers with afternoon thunderstorms. October to April is the active conference season; July is the busiest month overall (post-tax-year, pre-school-holiday).
Inner-city Joburg is busier and grittier than Sandton — security planning matters more, parking is more constrained, and delegate accommodation is sparser. For mixed-audience conferences (SA + international), Sandton or Rosebank usually wins on optics. For Joburg-native audiences, the inner city often beats Sandton on character and pricing.
