Sandton is South Africa's premier business district, a 20 km² zone north of central Johannesburg that contains the JSE, the headquarters of every major SA bank, the offices of most multinationals operating in Africa, and the densest cluster of five-star hotels on the continent. The Sandton skyline — the Michelangelo Towers, the Da Vinci, the Leonardo (the tallest building in Africa), and the Discovery and Sandton Convention Centre complexes — has become the postcard image of corporate South Africa. For most national and international corporate conferencing, this is the default location.
The Sandton Convention Centre (SCC), attached to the Sandton City retail and Nelson Mandela Square complex, is the largest dedicated venue — 22,000 m² of flexible floor space, capacity for 10,000+ delegate events. Around it sit the major hotel-conference brands: Radisson Blu Sandton, Hilton, InterContinental Sandton Towers, Da Vinci Hotel, Michelangelo, Saxon, Sandton Sun, Garden Court Sandton, plus boutique options (Athol Place, Fairlawns). Most premium SA financial-sector and mining-sector conferences default to this cluster.
For any conference where the optics of "premium SA business district" matter — international audiences, financial services, mining, asset management, multinational corporate stakeholder events. Also the right pick when delegates need walking-distance proximity to the JSE, banking HQs, or Sandton City retail. Less appropriate for community-sector, academic, or creative-industry events that work better in inner-city Joburg or Rosebank.
OR Tambo International is 25 minutes east via the R24 and N3. The Gautrain connects OR Tambo directly to Sandton in 15 minutes — the fastest reliable airport transfer in any SA conference city. Sandton itself has its own Gautrain station with direct links to Pretoria CBD, Hatfield, Centurion and the inner city.
Same Highveld pattern as the rest of Joburg — dry sunny winters, wet warm summers. The high altitude (1,750 m) means even summer evenings cool quickly. International delegates frequently underdress for July; brief them.
Day-delegate packages run R1,200–R1,800 at mid-tier conference hotels and R2,000–R3,500+ at the premium end. Hotel rooms run R2,800–R6,500 for four-star, R8,000+ at the Saxon and InterContinental. Sandton restaurants and after-hours options are dense — partner programmes practically run themselves.
